About Me

My name is Alex, and I’m at school studying for my GCSEs, as well as an A Level in physics. In fact, almost done now – the exams are in a few weeks. Next year, I’ll be doing A Levels in Latin, French and Biology. I’m also currently studying for my MPhil in mathematics (I got my degree last year!). My research area is gravitation and general relativity – including some cool stuff like black holes! However, I’m also interested in electromagnetism, astronomy, high energy physics and nanotechnology.

My other interests and hobbies include digital photography, 3D art, programming (C++), listening to (and occasionally composing) music, and playing video games. In particular, I like Portal 2, Company of Heroes and Red Faction Guerilla. I’ve also been playing Half Life 2 recently. In case you’re wondering, yes I have taken a look at the Source SDK. But the problem is, there are a number of annoying setup issues, so I’ve given it a miss for now.

If you want to know more about my experiences with programming in the past, and how I came to use C++ and SFML, then you’ll have to wait. Hopefully I’ll write an article all about that in the end :)

Can you make web apps or desktop apps using sfml?

Desktop apps. It is supported on Windows and Unix operating systems.

I have seen threads on the SFML forum about a port to some kind of web platform, but I imagine something like that would take a long time to happen, if at all.

I’m lovin’ your SFML blog so far, man! SFML seems to be a much better alternative to SDL, as it is object-oriented and dynamically linked, and thus better suited to C++ projects. I like your tutorials and links; they are very helpful to me.

On an off-topic note, good to see another HL/Portal player around here! ;)

SFML is indeed a great library. I’m glad you like the blog – thanks for the feedback!
      “dynamically linked”
If you are referring to the use of shared libraries/dynamic link libraries, then SDL has this too. Indeed, with SDL, you have to use dynamic libraries or pay a license fee ;) SFML’s zlib license lets you choose between static and dynamic :)

      “HL/Portal player”
Likewise. I’m still partway through HL and it’s pretty good, but Portal is just amazing. I just have one or two more levels of multiplayer to do with my brother…
